About Us
We have been madly in love with each other since meeting back in November, 2021. Cameron was Brisbane based and just finished his 2nd year of med school, and me (Mikayla) being Gold Coast based just finished my first year of Geology. We instantly bonded over our love of movies, music, obscure pop culture references, food, and the fact that we both have made decade long careers out of exotic entertainment. Fast forward, and I have dragged Cameron down to the Gold Coast where we fall deeper in love every day.
We are absolute suckers for a staycay, and we try getting away for a local romantic night once a month. Our first international holiday was South Korea in 2023, and with that being a monumental success our travel bug flourished. We share interests in cultural, historical, adventure, nature, and most importantly the unusual when planning a holiday.
Why we Created Our Getaway Story
Our Getaway Story is a way of documenting our travels, and to give recommendations to those who are likeminded. We are not full time travelers or digital nomads. Both of us have worked very hard for our careers and wish to evolve them through our lives. We also live in paradise, with a house full of pets, a 10 year old, and hopefully more on the way. Our budgets for holidays sit in the middle of the spectrum. We do love finding a good deal, but we don’t forfeit experiences we want to do to save money.
The biggest obstacle we face while planning a holiday is time. Our lives don’t allow us to have months to holiday, the longest time away we can steal is 4 weeks. So we need to meticulously plan to get the most out of our trip. If this sounds like you, we hope that you will enjoy Our Getaway Story.
Cameron
Mikayla
Canadian born in 96, I then immigrated to Central Queensland at 8. I spent my childhood exploring local beaches and camping all over Northern Australia. I then moved to the Gold Coast at 18 and began my career as an exotic dancer, this financially set me up, and gave me the opportunity to travel to 16 countries. Then hit the pandemic, a speed bump for most, but it gave me the opportunity to think about my next move. I began a degree in Science, where I learnt my love of physics, programming, and paleontology, but ultimately majored in Geology. I LOVE the outdoors, and I now have a special appreciation for how the natural environment formed.
Our Travel Companions
Our families often accompany us while travelling, so here is a brief introduction to everyone who joins us on our adventures. Firstly we have Cam’s 10yo son Felix, who is our designated kiddo. He is pretty much up for any activity that is active, and is a wonderful little traveler.
My siblings Julia, her partner Zaq, and Dawson have been on many adventures with us. Being cut from the same cloth we all share a love of experience. Julia and Zaq came with us on our trip to Canada, and Dawson and I went together on a road trip through Tasmania in 2022.
Cams dad Gerry is the holidaying king, he basically always has a getaway booked within a few weeks at any time. My parents Nick and Karrie love small getaways in their caravan, or epic treks that take months ore even years to plan. Its easy to see how we fell in love with adventure.
Lastly, but definitely not least, are our two dogs. Trixy is an 11yo sheepdog x cattledog, and Eliza is a 5yo Rough Collie. They are both very well behaved girls that we love taking out with us on road trips. We also have 2 cats, but they tend to stay at home.

These are some trips that we have discussed in detail or have started to book in the coming year:
